Mary Richards paid $130 a month for the unforgettable studio apartment she rented in Minneapolis. The apartment’s grand windows, elaborate moldings, charming chimney, vaulted ceilings, and sunken living room created an environment that was a young career woman’s dream. The set of the Mary Tyler Moore Show was more than memorable, it helped to define Mary Richards’ character on the show.
The apartment consisted of one large living area, a closet, a bathroom, and a tiny kitchen. So much pizazz was packed into such a small space and it reflected the chic style of its occupant. The main character of the beloved sitcom threw dinner parties, hosted dates, and even made sleeping on a sleeper sofa seem exciting in this small space. Her furnishings were an eclectic mix of investment pieces and thrift store finds that showcased her groovy taste.
It seems that our favorite independent career woman knew how to create beauty on a budget just like our favorite designer, Barbara Heil-Sonneck. Barbara will create a retro modern Mary Tyler Moore Show inspired space within The Total Wine and Design Experience exhibit at the 2011 Spring Atlanta Home Show.
