The seasons, they are a-changin’, and as we transition from summer to fall, there’s no better time to give your outdoor space the update it’s been longing for. One of the many perks of living in the South is being able to enjoy outdoor living space nearly year-round. As a design company, we often focus on the popular interior design trends, but there are also several outdoor living trends popping up across Atlanta.
This year, outdoor spaces are functioning much like an interior space such as a living room, with comfortable furniture for lounging and plenty of additions for entertaining. More than ever, we have noticed homeowners wanting their indoor spaces to blend seamlessly with the great outdoors. The three main qualities people look for in outdoor furniture is how comfortable, attractive and sturdy it is. Who has ever been comfortable in a weather-beaten wicker or rusty metal chair? Not us! That’s why choosing weather-proof furniture that coordinates with or imitates the furniture found in your home is key, from comfy couches and functional coffee tables to oversized dining tables and lounging chairs. Choose sturdy framed furniture and accessories, such as cushions, pillows and curtains, made from water and mildew resistant materials. Vibrant rugs, polyester terrycloth and even performance velvet are being used to make the outdoor space look and feel just like the indoor space.
Homes throughout Atlanta often feature a covered porch or patio that includes additions like outdoor fireplaces, kitchens and wiring for a television, as well as plenty of room for entertainment and relaxation. Outdoor cooking has become increasingly popular and can be seen in the form of a simple grilling space to a full-scale kitchen complete with a custom built-in grill, outdoor refrigerator, industrial sink and more. Fireplaces allow you to enjoy your outdoor space throughout the cooler months, while an outdoor tv coupled with comfortable furniture truly offers you an outdoor living room.
For additional privacy from neighbors and insects, many homeowners are also leaning toward a screened-in porch. These allow you to stay sheltered from the elements while still feeling one with nature. Screened porches are perfect for outdoor dining spaces free of bugs and critters, or they can be utilized as additional living rooms or lounging areas. We’ve even seen great screened porches that include a wet bar, making it the ideal entertaining space in any weather!
Besides beauty and relaxation, upgraded outdoor spaces are also helping homeowners sell their homes! According to Remodeling’s 2017 Cost Vs. Value report, outdoor living areas continue to yield a significant return on an owner’s initial investment. The data recorded says returns of 54.9 percent to 71 percent are seen from the costs to build features such as backyard patios and deck additions upon resale.
If you’re looking for ways to improve the resale value of your home, or simply want a space to enjoy year-round, consider designing an outdoor living space! Additions such as patios and decks, fire pits and outdoor kitchens, and even swimming pools, can improve the chances of selling your home for more and, in some cases, faster!
